I’m going to do my best to answer this question in VERY simplistic terms (perhaps even overly simplistic).
First of all, you need to understand that the lower brain (your Guardian Angel / Early Detection Warning System) works in tandem with your autonomic nervous system (your Animator / Reactor / Feeler).  The lower brain collects thoughts, memories, and imaginings from your higher brain (yourThinker).  It also tries to determine where you are in time and space (and, consequently, whether or not you are CURRENTLY SAFE) from the information that it gleans through your five senses.
